Have you heard the term “Skimpflation”? 

When it comes to purchasing items we all want the most that money can buy, especially when it relates to groceries. Along with the most for our money, I would venture a guess that we all want our food items to taste good too! Have you ever bought something, only to find that it doesn’t taste like you remember?

If you are anything like me, you may second guess yourself; thinking that you may be imagining or remembering wrong. I’m here to tell you that more than likely you are not wrong. Isn’t that great to hear? Many companies are now replacing what quality ingredients with cheaper ingredients to save money. Thus where the term “Skimpflation” comes to play.

In the easiest terms to understand skimplation is when a company reformulates their products using cheaper ingredients. Why is this done? Of course it is to save the company money! When prices are on the rise some companies would rather use cheaper ingredients than raise their prices much.

Skimpflation is a by product of inflation and is not only confined to food products. Skimpflation can also come in the form of smaller packages for the same price as the larger. These are changes that do not have to be recognized on the labeling. This is where as shoppers we need to check labels.

If a food item doesn’t taste like it use to, bake like before, isn’t as fluffy as it used to be or, seems to not be as thick; all of these could possibly be attributed to skimpflation. What are possible consequences for us,  the consumer?

• Substitutions could be worse for our health.
• Allergic reactions where there were none before.
• Actual higher cost.
